Chapter Six
The rain beat down outside, rivulets of water streaking the pane after the week of fine weather. In the centre of the cosy parlour, two men stared at Prudence in disapproval.
“Clarke, Major Sterling saw you in your mistress’s dressing room.”
She darted her gaze from one to the other. Post-dinner, post-brandy, Ned was in high spirits and Harry radiated a now-familiar genial impatience. “I was tidying. There was a right mess, sir, things everywhere. I found undergarments hanging from the curtain rod.”
Harry chuckled but quieted immediately when Ned cast him a dark look. “Do you find her insolence amusing?”
“Err, no. No, of course not.”
“Major Sterling also contends that he saw you secret an object upon your person.”
“He’s ly—mistaken, sir.”
Harry spoke up. “You dare correct me?”
He learns quickly, or is it that my husband is such a brilliant teacher? Or, she wondered, was it simply that he wanted more of what they had only sampled before?
During the blissful two days since the episode in the maze, Ned had allowed them some contact but had carefully controlled their interactions. Harry’s sexual frustration was now quite evident, sparking an answering fire within Pru herself. And Ned, well. Ned was taking his own pleasure from their difficulties, as Pru knew very well.
Harry had her silver-backed brush. He deftly spun it between his fingers before holding it up by its long handle. “You hid this in your skirts before you left the room.”
“Master, I swear—”
“Hush, Clarke.”
Harry said, “What else has she been stealing, that’s what I’d like to know.” There was a note of predatory eagerness in his voice, lighting his eyes, that was thrillingly new.
“And if she steals,” said Ned, circling her. “What other illicit things does the slut get up to?”
Heat pooled in her cunny, a titillating mix of anticipation and uncertainty. Earlier in their bedchamber, when she’d reached for her nightdress, Ned had corrected her, informing her they had other plans.
Now, Ned was in his robe, black silk, and Harry, too, a blue brocade that made his skin and hair glow tawny. Though Pru was the only one of them properly dressed, her maid’s garments—and what she wore underneath—marked her as completely, utterly at their mercy.
“Given your length of service and dedication to your mistress’s pleasures,” Ned said, with a curl to his lips that told her he knew exactly what she was thinking, “I’m prepared to turn a blind eye at this time. But Major Sterling brought forward the complaint on behalf of Mrs. Lyell and therefore I leave it to him to decide if you should be punished. Major Sterling?”
Harry was a tall man, a few inches over Ned’s six-foot frame, but she’d never noticed how big he was. He caged her in, simply by standing too close, making her feel vulnerable, desirable, female.
“I think,” Harry said, undressing her with that stare, “that the punishment should fit the crime.” He slapped the hairbrush against his palm.
“So be it,” Ned said, inclining his head to his friend. “Do as you see fit.
